Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose the ability to filter waste products from the blood. This can lead to buildup of toxins in the body and health complications. CKD diagnosis is made through blood and urine tests.

There are five stages of kidney disease determined based on eGFR. Treatment of CKD aims at slowing progression of the disease, managing complications, and symptoms.

Uncontrolled Hypertension

Uncontrolled hypertension is a condition where blood pressure remains persistently elevated despite medication and lifestyle changes. Many may not experience any symptoms but this may lead to serious complications including kidney disease. Treatment for uncontrolled hypertension includes investigating possible causes and addressing reasons.

Kidney Transplant

A surgical procedure where a healthy kidney from a donor is placed into the body of a person with kidney failure. Living donor transplant is when a healthy kidney is donated by a living person, usually a family member or a friend. A deceased donor transplant is where a kidney is donated by a person who has recently died.

Coastal Kidney Center is affiliated with many of the transplant centers in the region and has a very high rate of kidney transplantation. Our providers work in collaboration with the transplant team pre and post transplantation.

End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

A severe condition where kidneys have permanently lost most of their function and can no longer adequately filter waste products from the
blood, maintain fluid balance or electrolyte balance. Most common causes are diabetes and hypertension. Diagnosis is based on blood tests and urine studies. Treatment includes dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Proteinuria Testing and Management Services

Proteinuria and hematuria are medical conditions characterized by the presence of protein and blood (red cells) in the urine. Proteinuria and hematuria may not cause any symptoms in mild cases; however, in severe cases it can lead to bubbly urine, swelling (edema), uncontrolled hypertension, and renal failure. Proteinuria and hematuria are diagnosed through urine tests.

Electrolyte Imbalance Management Services

Occur when the levels of essential minerals (electrolytes) in the
body become too high or too low. These minerals play a crucial role in various bodily functions. Electrolyte balances are diagnosed through blood tests and treatment involves addressing the underlying cause and restoring electrolyte balance. Electrolyte imbalances can be serious if left untreated.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. Kidney stones can affect any part of the urinary system, from kidneys to the bladder. Passing a kidney stone can be painful. Kidney stones may be associated with an underlying medical condition. Providers will
be able to investigate potential causes and recommend preventive treatment to reduce the risk of recurrent kidney stones.
